On 23rd July 2024, Thomas Woodhall, a Partner in our Cardiff office was invited to act as the expert witness in a mock trial, organised for NFU Mutual by the DAC Beachcroft Property Team.
The mock trial was based around an actual case, with all attendees being provided with the Particulars of Claim, the Defence, and the Expert Report. The day consisted of opening submissions, cross examination of a witness and then the expert witness reassessed the new evidence that arose from the cross examination. After closing submissions, the judgement was delivered.
The case on trial involved a tumble dryer at a residential property and the claimant, barristers and judge were played by solicitors and barristers from DAC Beachcroft. The owner of the property, ‘Mr Smoker’, was played by Jonathan Bingham. The Claimant’s barrister was Katie Walmsley and George Aubrey acted as the barrister for the Defendant - the manufacturer of the tumble dryer. Ricky Parmar played the part of the Judge.
The attendees from NFU Mutual had the opportunity to witness the court proceedings and also discuss the case with the barristers in break-out groups. The event was most interesting and enjoyable, with excellent feedback received. We look forward to participating in future events later in the year. Thank you to DAC Beachcroft and NFU Mutual for organising the mock trial.
