Experience:
Ben started his career as an Electrical Engineer working for a leading energy company specialising in fault diagnosis and repair as well as undertaking installation work, testing and inspecting, in a range of domestic and commercial settings.
After almost ten years in the role Ben was promoted to a Qualified Supervisor / Safety Assurance Engineer where he spent a further four years. In this role Ben was responsible for the training, development and assessment of a multi-disciplined team as well as undertaking technical and incident investigations.
Ben joined Burgoynes in June 2021 and he is based in our Basingstoke office. Since joining Ben has investigated a range of incidents including fires, explosions, electrical incidents, water ingress and theft.
As part of these investigations Ben has carried out detailed scene inspections, interviewed witnesses, analysed CCTV footage and alarm logs, carried out laboratory examinations of fire damaged equipment and scrutinised components with the use of X-ray imaging and computed tomography (CT) scans. Ben has provided expert advice to insurers, loss adjusters, solicitors, electrical distribution network operators and private clients.
Aside from being a fully qualified electrician, Ben was awarded a first-class honours degree in Building Services Engineering and a distinction prize for his Masters degree in Forensic Engineering and Science.
For his Masters thesis Ben used Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to analyse charcoal samples and evaluate variations in the resulting spectra caused by differing combustion temperatures. Ben built a mathematical model using principal component analysis and he demonstrated that the model could be used to differentiate between low, medium and high temperature fires using the FTIR spectra of charcoal.
Ben is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and he is working towards becoming a chartered engineer.
