Asia Power Forum

April was a busy month for Dr J H Burgoyne & Partners (Int’l) Ltd. Dr Jon Sykes, a Partner based in our Singapore office, attended the Asia Power Forum at the Fullerton Hotel, Singapore.  The Asia Power Forum is a claims conference in Singapore that is now in its third year and is aimed at those involved in power generation insurance.  It has 380 attendees from around the region, with representatives including regional loss adjusters and insurance claims managers.  Burgoynes has sponsored the event since its inception, this year sponsoring the conference cocktail reception for overseas delegates, sponsors and speakers.

This year a “Primer Session” was added to the event programme, intended as an introduction to the energy insurance market.  The session included a case study on power generation claims and Dr Sykes was invited to sit on the panel alongside other industry professionals.

Asia Marine Casualty Forum

While Dr Jon Sykes was busy at the Asia Power Forum, Dr Seb Nørager, a Partner based in our Singapore office, attended the Asia Marine Casualty Forum, at Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.

AMCF 2019 was attended by over 400 industry professionals across two days.  This event brought together invited delegates to hear from the world’s leading specialists to discuss and debate topics in vogue and which govern the direction of casualty solutions and management.

Dr Nørager gave a joint presentation with Andreas Brachel of Gard P&I entitled “Management of ‘Live’ Container Ship Fires”.  The presentation provide Gard’s and Burgoynes’ perspectives on the effective management of ‘live’ container ship fires; from discovery of the incident and first response to completion of discharge and beyond.  Efficient and complete resolution of such cases almost invariably requires assistance from a container terminal and therefore special emphasis was given to their views on best practice in the engagement of Port Authorities.

Burgoynes was pleased to be one of the sponsors of the forum.

Asian Claims Convention

Later in the month, Dr Darren Holling and Youming Chen, from our Singapore office, and Mark Cousins, a Partner from our Australia office, attended the Asian Claims Convention, at Sofitel Phnom Penh in Cambodia.  The theme for the convention was: ‘Innovation, Disruption and Forensic Advances in Claims.’  The event was attended by loss adjusters, brokers, insurers, reinsurers, lawyers and accountants. Burgoynes was pleased to sponsor the speakers’ prizes.  Dr Holling had the honour this year to present at the conference; his presentation highlighted the current trends in fires and explosions in the Asia Pacific area (APAC), including a more detailed look at the statistics published by several countries. After discussing current fire incident trends, he went on to talk about fires that involve buildings covered with combustible cladding materials and future building developments to be potentially concerned about.
