Academic and Professional Qualifications:

MEng Civil Engineering - The University Of Bristol
PhD Civil Engineering - The University Of Sheffield

Experience:

Following a degree in Civil Engineering, Ben joined the Nuclear First Doctoral Training Centre at the University of Sheffield where he conducted his PhD on a decontamination technique to be used in nuclear decommissioning known as laser scabbling. Laser scabbling uses a high power (5 kW) near infra red laser to induce spalling of the contaminated concrete surface, to reduce the volume of radioactive waste being spent for disposal. His PhD was an experimental investigation with the aim of determining the mechanism responsible for laser scabbling. The main conclusion was that the vaporisation of the free water was responsible for the explosive spalling.

He joined Burgoynes in 2015.
