Lewis graduated with a first class honours degree from Heriot-Watt University in 2009 before pursuing a PhD focussed on the synthesis and analysis of materials with complex magnetic and electrical properties. This introduced him to a number of techniques at the chemistry/physics interface and often involved working at temperature extremes (both above and below ambient) to synthesise new materials and extract key data. Following his PhD, he spent a brief period as a postdoctoral researcher, looking to understand the properties of materials used in high reliability battery systems.
In early 2015, Lewis joined Burgoynes where he specialises in the investigation of fires and explosions. To date, he has investigated numerous fires in both domestic and commercial premises.
