Lewis graduated with a first class honours degree from Heriot-Watt University before undertaking a PhD at the University of St Andrews concerned with complex electronic and magnetic materials. This involved the use of high temperature furnaces and complex analytical equipment, often making use of ionising radiation. Lewis published several articles in the scientific literature during this period, both detailing his own studies and also as a skilled contributor to other research projects. Following his PhD, Lewis was a postdoctoral researcher concerned with the study of high-reliability lithium batteries.
In early 2015 Lewis joined Burgoynes as a fire and explosion investigator and since then has investigated over 100 incidents in both domestic and commercial premises. The range of these investigations is diverse and includes fires associated with domestic electrical installations such as underfloor heating and fixed wiring, as well as more industrial concerns such as sawdust filtration systems and the storage of combustible materials. Such investigations have often involved the consideration of best practice and applicable technical standards.
